Trauma and Pain

Trauma can have a profound impact on both physical and emotional wellbeing and may influence how the nervous system processes and responds to pain. For some individuals, pain develops following a traumatic event such as a motor vehicle accident, workplace injury, assault, medical procedure, natural disaster, or other distressing life experience. In others, previous traumatic experiences may contribute to increased pain sensitivity, muscle tension, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and difficulties with physical function.
Modern pain science has shown that the nervous system can become more protective following trauma, resulting in heightened sensitivity to pain and other physical symptoms. This does not mean that pain is “imagined” or “all in your head.” Rather, it reflects real changes in how the brain and nervous system interpret and respond to signals from the body.

At Neurovia, we recognise that every person's experience of trauma and pain is unique. We provide compassionate, trauma-informed care that prioritises safety, respect, collaboration, and individual choice throughout the assessment and treatment process.
Our approach focuses on helping individuals better understand their pain, gradually rebuild confidence in movement, improve physical function, and return to meaningful activities at a pace that feels safe and achievable. Treatment may include pain education, exercise therapy, movement retraining, pacing strategies, nervous system regulation techniques, and support to develop long-term self-management skills.
We commonly assist individuals experiencing pain associated with:
Motor vehicle accidents
Workplace injuries
Physical injuries and accidents
Medical and surgical procedures
Psychological trauma
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Persistent pain that developed following a traumatic event
Our goal is to help individuals regain confidence in their bodies, improve function, and move forward with greater comfort and independence through a compassionate, evidence-based approach to care.
Your pain is real, and there are reasons why it may be persisting. We are here to help.
