Pain before and after surgery is a common part of the surgical journey and can significantly impact mobility, physical function, sleep, independence, and overall recovery. While some discomfort is expected following surgery, effective pain management and rehabilitation are important to support healing, optimise outcomes, and reduce the risk of ongoing pain and disability.

Research has shown that factors present before surgery, including pre-existing pain, reduced physical function, anxiety, poor sleep, and persistent pain conditions, can influence post-operative recovery. Likewise, appropriate rehabilitation following surgery plays an important role in restoring movement, rebuilding strength, improving confidence, and facilitating a return to meaningful activities.
