Pain in Autoimmune Conditions

Autoimmune conditions occur when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues, leading to inflammation and a wide range of symptoms that can affect the joints, muscles, nerves, connective tissues, skin, and internal organs. Many autoimmune conditions are associated with persistent pain, fatigue, stiffness, reduced physical function, and difficulties participating in everyday activities.

Pain experienced in autoimmune conditions can arise from inflammation, changes within the nervous system, muscle weakness, joint dysfunction, reduced physical activity, and secondary musculoskeletal complications. Symptoms often fluctuate over time, with periods of increased disease activity and symptom flare-ups impacting mobility, independence, work, family life, and overall quality of life.

At Neurovia, we understand that living with an autoimmune condition can be physically and

emotionally challenging. We take the time to conduct thorough assessments to understand how your condition is affecting your pain, movement, function, and daily activities, and develop an individualised treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals.

Our approach focuses on helping individuals safely maintain or improve mobility, strength, endurance, and physical function while supporting effective symptom management and long-term self-management strategies. Treatment may include education, exercise therapy, movement retraining, fatigue management, pacing strategies, mobility training, equipment prescription where appropriate, and support to optimise participation in meaningful activities.

We commonly assist individuals living with autoimmune conditions such as:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

  • Sjögren's syndrome

  • Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma)

  • Psoriatic arthritis

  • Vasculitis

  • Inflammatory myopathies

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)

  • Autoimmune neuropathies

  • Other autoimmune and inflammatory conditions

Our goal is to help individuals better understand and manage their symptoms, maximise physical function, maintain independence, and improve quality of life through compassionate, evidence-based care.
