Pain and Intellectual Impairment

Pain is a common yet frequently overlooked health concern for individuals living with intellectual impairment. Identifying and managing pain can be particularly challenging, especially for those who have difficulty communicating their symptoms, understanding pain experiences, or expressing how pain is affecting their daily lives.

Unfortunately, pain in people with intellectual impairment is often misunderstood, under-recognised, underdiagnosed, or attributed to behavioural changes rather than an underlying physical condition. As a result, pain may go untreated for prolonged periods, leading to reduced physical function, increased distress, behavioural changes, reduced participation in daily activities, and a diminished quality of life.

At Neurovia, we understand that effective pain assessment requires more than simply asking someone to rate their pain. Our clinicians are experienced in assessing and treating pain in both verbal and non-verbal individuals living with intellectual impairment. We utilise a combination of clinical assessment, observation of movement and behaviour, input from families and support networks, and evidence-based assessment strategies to identify potential sources of pain and their impact on function, wellbeing and quality of life.

Our approach focuses on understanding the individual, recognising how pain may present differently in patients with intellectual disabilities, and developing personalised management strategies that are practical, meaningful goals, and support needs.

We commonly assist individuals experiencing:

  • Persistent musculoskeletal pain

  • Pain associated with neurological conditions

  • Pain related to reduced mobility and physical function

  • Post-operative pain

  • Pain associated with disability and complex health conditions

  • Behavioural changes potentially related to pain

  • Chronic and complex pain conditions

Our goal is to ensure that every individual has access to compassionate, evidence-based pain assessment and management, regardless of their cognitive abilities, while supporting improved comfort, physical function, participation, and quality of life.
